Spanish Hemstitching adds a beautiful decorative touch to any project by seamlessly joining two finished edges. It’s perfect for attaching borders, adding edging to skirts or curtains, or piecing fabric together to achieve the desired width, such as for a tablecloth. On compatible models, the Spanish Hemstitch Distance Plate easily snaps onto the standard needle plate, making it simple to create elegant, openwork seams with precision.

How to Use:

1. Attach the Distance Plate Snap the Distance Plate onto the needle plate by aligning the prongs with the holes on the plate. Ensure it doesn’t cover the feed teeth. Then, snap on the Spanish Hemstitch Foot.
2. Thread the Machine Use a decorative thread on top and in the bobbin for an elegant finish.
3. Select the Stitch Choose a zigzag or three-step zigzag stitch. Adjust the stitch width to ensure the needle catches both fabric edges.

Tip: Avoid stitches with excessive side-to-side or forward-backward motion for the best results.


4. Prepare the Fabric Make sure the fabric edges are finished. If necessary, press under a 3/8” (1 cm) seam allowance on the edges to be joined.
5. Position the Fabric Place the pressed edges on each side of the Distance Plate.
6. Lower the Presser Foot Lower the foot to hold the fabric in place.
7. Start Sewing
   Begin with a long thread tail for both the top and bobbin threads. Hold these threads as you start stitching until the needle catches the fabric.
   The needle will initially stitch on “air” before reaching the fabric edge. Once it catches the fabric, you can release the threads.
   Continue sewing, gently guiding the fabric edges together in front of the foot.

Optional: For an added decorative touch, place a decorative thread in the groove of the Distance Plate before sewing.

This technique creates elegant, openwork seams that add a unique, professional finish to any project.
